Tenth SAMVOA Formal Mess Dinner
24th October, 2015
Glen Waverley RSL,
Guest of Honour; Lt Col Barrington Ingram AM RFD ED – Australian Light Horse.
On Saturday 24th October, 2015, the National Executive of SAMVOA proudly hosted its tenth annual formal mess dinner at the Glen Waverley RSL. There was a lot of interest in the Guest of Honour as he had served in the Australian Defence Force and, in particular, The Australian Light Horse. He started his service in 1954, serving as a Corporal and then a Sergeant before being commissioned as a Lieutenant in the 5th Battalion Victorian Scottish Regiment. Through the Gordon Highlanders, the Victorian Scottish and Cape Town Highlanders had the same affiliation.
From there he progressed up the commissioned ranks to command the 6th Battalion, Royal Victoria Regiment as Lt Colonel during 1969 while in action in Vietnam. Barry retired on the 28th September, 1980 after completing 50 years as an active Infantry Officer.
Furthermore, we honoured him particularly as he has been such a good friend of SAMVOA.
The Formal Mess evening began for the 72 guests with Drinks at 1930H at the downstairs reception. Mike Black, the Mess President presented the South African Sherry before the call to dinner was made by the Mess Vice President, Brent van de Stadt. The Guest of Honour and guests were piped into the mess area by our piper, Karl Brown.
Grace was said and the Host, Veteran Tony Macquet welcomed everyone.
The menu was the following, hwith alternate servings.
• The Entrée was:
o Minestrone soup, served with parmesan cheese.
• The Mains were:
o Karoo Lamb Shank, braised in a rich tomato, rosemary and red wine sauce, served on a bed of mashed potato, accompanied by seasonal vegetables.
o Rainbow Chicken Breast Fillet, marinated in preserved lemon, coriander, parsley and selected spices served on Natal style cous-cous, topped with a tomato and chickpea sauce and complimented with hummus cream.
• Desserts were;
o Ouma’s Sticky-Date Pudding, drizzled with butterscotch sauce and a dollop of double cream.
o Tanie Marie’s Cheese Cake, topped with passionfruit pulp and served with double cream.
• Coffee, tea and beverages from the bar.
During the proceedings, our Mess President welcomed Barrington and spoke of his many senior positions in the ADF and war experience in Vietnam. Barrington responded in his own style and we all enjoyed a very interesting presentation.
The Toasts were made:
1. South Africa, the Mother Country, wishing her peace
2. Australia, our new home, may we be worth citizens.
3. Fallen Serviceman and women, “Lest we Forget”.
Veteran Karl Brown played a very well-received medley on his pipes, which included some favourite South African tunes.
Veteran Fanie Estebeth, as Mess Vice President, controlled the evening well and all went as planned
