2023 - Presentations & Special Guest

Warragul RSL - Friday 13th January 2023

Friday 13th – Unlucky for some, but not unlucky for SAMVOA Warragul, where this Club showed its stripes last night with Hannes Venter, OC 4 Recce “Iron First from the Sea” being honoured by our friends and colleagues at the Warragul RSL.

Hannes’s family were very proud of him for being recognised so fully.

Congratulations to our Club Chairman, Kevin Edwards, who did so well in presenting a SAMVOA “Plaque of Appreciation”, thanking the RSL for this incredible honour and their absolute acceptance of SAMVOA by way of the SAMVOA signage, which is on their street, and adds us to the United Nations and the Peacekeepers, as associates of the RSL. You can’t get better than that!!!!

In addition, it was gratifying that the RSL was delighted to agree to hold in trust our “Absent Friends” stand, which will be hung in the bar, Ales on Albert, at a strategic point in the room, now known as “Springbok Corner”.

This is the stand that has an Australian Digger slouch hat, with a WW2 South African cloth helmet, with the commonly worn steel helmet between.

These helmets are situated above a picture of 2 Springboks and 2 Diggers, playing cards in a gun pit, somewhere in Africa.

There were 9 South African Veterans present, including Hannes. Even with Brian Tucker away overseas and Francois Theron not being able to make it, we still managed 8 local veterans.

There was a wonderful display of militaria models available for viewing, thanks to the Warragul RSL modelling Club also featuring private collections from some SAMVOA members, some of which included Joe Keyter's collection of 3D printed weapons and vehicles.

Many thanks to those who contributed, including:

  • To the Warragul RSL and their Catering Team for the special snacks.

  • The RSL Modelling Club for its display of militaria models.

  • The Management Team of the RSL and those behind the bar of Ales on Albert.

  • The anonymous donor, who donated $250 for a round of drinks after the function.

  •  Joe Keyter who displayed his collection of 3D printed weapons and vehicles.

  • Johan Swanepoel, our local biltong manufacturer who kindly donated a kilo of biltong for the night.

  • Tamryn White, our SAMVO Webmaster, who took a lot of photos.
